FIFA Applies the Arsène Wenger Offside Rule for the First Time in the Canadian League

The Canadian Premier League is set to undergo a significant tactical shift, with Arsène Wenger's offside rule coming into force on April 4. The rule, adopted by both FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB), states that an attacker is considered offside only if he is entirely beyond the second-to-last defender, adding an element of "daylight" intended to ease attacking play and encourage free-flowing matches.
As part of efforts to strengthen technology and officiating, the competition will roll out the simplified Football Video Support (FVS) system, which is triggered when coaches request a review of key incidents, with the aim of testing the new rule's impact on the flow of play and improving the accuracy of refereeing decisions.
The initiative aims to give teams more space to attack, heighten excitement for fans and grant players greater tactical freedom, potentially making it a pioneering experiment that could be replicated in other competitions in the future.
