Lamine Yamal Condemns Offensive Chants in Spanish Stands: 'Religion Is No Subject for Mockery'

Lamine Yamal, the young FC Barcelona and Spain national team star, sparked widespread controversy after voicing his dismay over offensive chants heard in the stands during Spain's match against Egypt, which included the phrase "whoever doesn't jump is a Muslim."
In a message posted on his Instagram account, Yamal affirmed that, although he was aware the chant was aimed at the opposing team and not at him personally, using religion in this context remains unacceptable and disrespectful. He said: "I am a Muslim, thank God… but such words remain offensive and have no place in football."
The player added that this behaviour does not represent all supporters, while stressing at the same time that mocking religious beliefs reflects ignorance and uncivilised conduct, calling for the differences within and beyond the stadiums to be respected.
He also emphasised that football must remain a space for support and enjoyment, free from any form of insult or discrimination, affirming that true sportsmanship is built on respect and tolerance among everyone.
Yamal concluded his message by thanking the fans who came to support his team with a positive spirit, saying: "Thank you to everyone who stood by us… see you at the World Cup."
