Morocco's Lawyers' Club Slams Senegalese Federation: End of 'Pitch Thuggery' and Dawn of a New Legal Era in Africa

Morocco's Lawyers' Club issued a strongly worded statement yesterday, Thursday, responding to recent remarks by the president of the Senegalese Football Federation, which followed the controversy surrounding the ruling of the appeals committee of the Confederation of African Football.
The club expressed surprise at what it described as the "emotional rhetoric" that dominated the press conference of the Senegalese Federation president, considering that he used language "far removed from the spirit of the law" by describing the appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport as a "legal crusade," as well as speaking of an "administrative heist" — expressions in which the statement saw clear signs of confusion in his argument.
The Lawyers' Club affirmed that the ruling issued by the appeals committee cannot be deemed arbitrary, but rather falls within an important development in case law aimed at filling a legal vacuum concerning cases of withdrawal from matches, noting that this judicial precedent marks a turning point for African football.
The statement added that this step puts an end to what it called "pitch thuggery," as it is no longer possible to use the threat of withdrawal or pressure to influence match results, amid the entrenchment of the principles of integrity and sportsmanship.
On another note, the club criticized the Senegalese Federation president's statements regarding the arrest of a number of fans, which he labeled "political blackmail," affirming that the Moroccan judiciary is independent and handles such cases in accordance with the law, especially given the existence of video evidence proving the acts attributed to them.
The statement also considered that invoking historical matters unrelated to the sporting case reflects a weakness in the legal argument and an attempt to stray from the core of the debate.
Morocco's Lawyers' Club concluded its statement by stressing that the Kingdom handled the matter with a legal spirit and a sense of responsibility, resorting to legal procedures in a civilized manner, without slipping into populist rhetoric.
The statement noted that some remarks that sought to downplay Morocco's title are nothing more than an implicit acknowledgment of its rightful claim, both on the sporting and legal levels.
In conclusion, the club affirmed that it reserves the right to take all necessary legal measures to defend the image of the Moroccan judiciary and the national sporting institutions.
